TFC’s Soteldo is evidence that the designated player spot is now a young man’s game

Yeferson Soteldo stands out on Toronto FC’s list of current and former designated players.

The average age at signing of the 13 designated players who came before the Venezuelan winger was more than 28 years old. Soteldo is 23 years, making him the second youngest designated player in Reds history. Matias Laba was 21 years old in his lone season with TFC in 2013.

Youth wasn’t the only reason president Bill Manning and general manager Ali Curtis set their sights on Soteldo, who had 20 goals and 17 assists in 104 appearances for Brazil’s Santos FC.
