Toronto FC secured its first trophy in four years Wednesday night, crowned victors of the Canadian Championship despite losing to the Vancouver Whitecaps in the second game of a two-leg final.
The Reds dropped the West Coast leg 2-1, but a 1-0 victory at BMO Field earlier this month, coupled with a last-gasp goal from midfielder Will Johnson in Vancouver, meant the 180-minute contest ended in a 2-2 aggregate score.
It was Toronto’s lone away goal that won the Reds the cup.
“Tonight was not our best game of the season,” midfielder Benoit Cheyrou, named the tournament’s most valuable player, admitted to reporters after the game.
