Toronto FC lost a heartbreaker Saturday night at BMO Field, with the Seattle Sounders winning Major League Soccer’s first cup final to be decided on penalties.
After a scoreless 120 minutes, the visitors won on penalties, 5-4.
The Sounders failed to register a single shot on net during open play and managed only three off-target shots — both league records. TFC Captain Michael Bradley and defender Justin Morrow couldn’t get the ball past Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei in the shootout.
For a team that notched as many goals in its first five playoff game as the entire Western Conference managed in its first three post-season rounds, the Reds struggled to find a way through Seattle’s compact back line in the first half.
