Major League Soccer made sure its championship cup stood out

“I wanted it to compete with other trophies around the world, like the Stanley Cup or the World Cup.”

When Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber called Rich Levy into his office following the 2007 MLS Cup final and asked the league’s then creative director to design a new vessel, his main directive was simple.

Garber wanted a cup, not a trophy.

The first two generations of the silverware handed out to MLS champion were the latter; it was time for a cup.

Levy agreed with Garber and, in less than a year, the cup used today was ready, Levy told the Star over the phone from New Jersey this week.
