Canada-born Ricardo Ferreira called up by Portugal for upcoming friendlies

This has probably been the most difficult month of Octavio Zambrano’s tenure as head coach of the Canadian men’s national team so far, but through no fault of his own.

After Bryan Cristante ruled himself out of Canada contention by playing for Italy in a World Cup qualifier in October, Zambrano may now be about to lose Mississauga-born Ricardo Ferreira as well.

The Braga central defender, who has Portuguese parents and joined FC Porto from the Toronto FC academy at age 15, has been approached by Canada Soccer about playing for the country of his birth.
