Major League Baseball announced there was no tampering when manager Joe Maddon left the Tampa Bay Rays and signed with the Chicago Cubs.
“The investigation produced no finding of a violation of Major League Rule 3(k) on Tampering,” MLB said in a statement Wednesday.
Maddon had one year remaining on his contract when he left Tampa Bay in late October, taking advantage of an opt-out clause in his contract after Rays executive Andrew Friedman left to become the vice president of baseball operations with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
A few days later on Oct. 31, Maddon agreed to a five-year, $25-million deal with the Cubs.
