Suspended relief pitcher Chris Perez retired earlier this week in a move that went under for radar for several days.
Perez, the former Cleveland Indians closer who is serving a 50-game suspension from Major League Baseball after testing positive for a drug of abuse, was with the Baltimore Orioles’ organization at Triple-A Norfolk and the only mention of his retirement was on the International League transactions report.
The 30-year-old Perez fell on hard times after making the American League All-Star team in 2011 and 2012 and saving 36 and 39 games for the Cleveland Indians. In five seasons with the Indians, he posted 124 saves and had a 3.
