On Saturday, the Toronto Blue Jays were in a close battle with their division rivals New York Yankees when a worrisome play occurred during the top half of the sixth inning. Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette was attempting to score on a Nathan Lukes single to right field when he was injured on the play in a collision at home with Yankees catcher Austin Wells.
Perhaps with inclement weather occurring and the rain coming down hard, Bichette slid into home plate with his knees and shins first, rather than his feet. With Wells receiving the ball with ample time from the outfield, his legs blocking the plate would impact with the Jays star shortstop’s left leg, resulting in Bichette needing some assistance as he limped and hobbled gingerly off the field, as per Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.
