ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — For all the youth near the top of the British Open leaderboard, which included 21-year-old Jordan Spieth and two amateurs about his age, experience won out at the Old Course on Monday.
Zach Johnson, a 39-year-old American, captured his second major championship, outlasting a star-studded field and surviving a four-hole playoff against Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman.
Johnson won the 2007 Masters, but had not finished in the top five at a major since the 2010 P.G.A. Championship and had never finished higher than 20th at the British Open in his 11 years on the PGA Tour.
