BALTIMORE — When the Yankees re-signed Stephen Drew in the off-season on a one-year, $5 million contract, it looked like a head-scratching deal, given that he had done little to earn it last season.
Over the course of the year, during which he also played for the Boston Red Sox, Drew had batted .162 — the third-worst mark over the last century for players with at least 300 at-bats.
But that deal looked like a modest risk Monday night as Drew belted a pinch-hit, seventh-inning grand slam that lifted the Yankees to a 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
