SEATTLE — The Yankees have acted cautiously with Masahiro Tanaka, treating him as if he were made of Venetian glass rather than flesh, blood and sinew, but on Wednesday, he reminded everyone why he is such a treasure.
Tanaka returned from the disabled list with a masterly performance, allowing one run and three hits in seven efficient innings as the Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners, 3-1.
The up-and-down Yankees, who lost three of four at lowly Oakland, will return home having swept their three games here.
Garrett Jones and Mark Teixeira homered to supply the offense, and Andrew Miller picked up his 17th save, although it was a taxing one, requiring him to get five outs and work out of a bases-loaded jam he helped create in the eighth.
