Winds Delay British Open and Force Monday Finish

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — Weather was the story of the British Open yet again Saturday at the Old Course. After another lengthy delay of play, tournament officials announced there was no choice but to schedule a Monday finish.

Torrential rain played havoc with the tournament Friday, pushing completion of the second round until Saturday morning. But players were allowed on the course for only about half an hour before screaming winds, sometimes gusting up to 40 miles per hour, forced officials to bring the players back in.

Organizers announced that “providing we have acceptable wind speeds,” play would resume around 4 p.
