Tony Stewart and Ty Dillon planned to trade places during Sunday's Geico 500 at Talladega. The questions were when and how long it would take for Dillon to get strapped into the No. 14 car.
Because of Talladega's high crash rate and potential injury risk, Stewart decided to start the race but step out of the car to avoid damage to his surgically repaired back. So, Stewart turned the car over to relief driver Dillon during a pit stop under the first caution flag on Lap 52.
The stop took about 80 seconds, a huge amount of time under normal circumstances.
