Wambach: U.S. would score more playing on grass

VANCOUVER — Abby Wambach has a theory as to why the U.S. is struggling to score goals this World Cup.

Turf.

She missed two would-be goals — classic Wambach headers — against Australia, including this one off a Megan Rapinoe free kick that skimmed off her head and out of bounds.

“The two headers that I had that I missed in the first game I think I score if we’re on grass,” Wambach said Saturday afternoon.

She missed another against Sweden.

“My focus was on getting my head on the end of a cross,” Wambach said.
