MLB umpire Paul Emmel needed to be removed from a game between the Angeles and Athletics Thursday after getting hit in the head by a bat from behind the plate.
The incident occurred during an at-bat in the bottom of the ninth inning. Angels infielder Jefry Marte lost control of his bat on the follow through; it struck Emmel on the top of his head, beyond the protection of his mask.
