The San Francisco 49ers were forced to turn back to Jimmy Garoppolo after starting quarterback Trey Lance was carted off with an ankle injury in the first quarter of their Week 2 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.
Following the contest, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Lance broke his ankle and will undergo season-ending surgery.
Lance looked to have hurt his ankle on a designed run on second-and-8 at the Seahawks' 21-yard line. He was immediately given an air cast and carted off the field.
It's a huge blow to the 49ers, who were banking on Lance to elevate their offense after Garoppolo led San Francisco to the NFC title game in 2021.
