Detroit (AFP) - Detroit Tigers closing relief pitcher Joe Nathan will miss the remainder of the Major League Baseball season because of a right elbow injury that requires surgery, the team announced Thursday.

The 40-year-old US right-hander earned 35 saves last year in his first season with the Tigers. He opened the season with a save against Minnesota but then went out of the lineup with a right elbow strain and was pulled from a planned Wednesday appearance after feeling pain in the elbow.
