The U.S. and Slovakia head to a penalty shootout in a quarterfinal game.

The U.S. men’s hockey team, which rose to the Olympic tournament’s top seed after a perfect preliminary round, is now in a penalty shootout in a quarterfinal game against Slovakia.

The Americans led 2-1 and had nearly sealed a victory until, with about 44 seconds to play in the game and the Slovakian net empty, Marek Hrivik maneuvered the puck into the net, stunning the Americans and setting off a shocked celebration from his teammates.

The teams were scoreless in a single overtime period.

The game proved a potent test for the Americans, who tied the score at 1-1 with 46 seconds to play in the first period, and did not take a lead until almost midway through the second.
