The world of draft-pick compensation is kind of fascinating.
Some teams have traditionally prefered to stay away from free agents who are attached to draft-pick compensation, preferring to hold onto their first-round picks as a way of obtaining young, elite (also risky and unknown) talent. Other teams haven't worried about losing picks much at all; they prefer to have established veterans join the big-league team.
