A suspect in the fatal shooting of the former N.F.L. standout Joe McKnight in an apparent “road rage” episode in Louisiana was released without charge on Friday, and former teammates of the football player took to social media to express outrage at the unexplained move.

The suspect, Ronald Gasser, 54, was freed overnight even though he admitted shooting McKnight, the sheriff said in a news conference on Friday in Harvey, La. Asked why Mr. Gasser was released without a formal charge, the sheriff alluded to state “statutes” that allowed the move while the case was under investigation.
