Stephen Curry Gave Davidson Good Publicity, and a Bad Rap

The confidence and charisma Stephen Curry has shown during the Golden State Warriors’ march to the N.B.A. finals was on display in 2009 when he sent an email to the entire Davidson College student body. It was an invitation to the premiere of his first rap video.

“This is probably one of the coolest things I’ve done during college,” the email said. “I mean, going to the Elite Eight was great, but this…”

It was hardly the first time basketball and rap had intersected, but in this instance it was strictly benign. Allen Iverson had rapped about whether or not someone was man enough to use a gun, and Kobe Bryant had questionably labeled himself a thug poet.
