South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is retiring, effective immediately, sources confirmed to ESPN.

The news was first reported by SI.com.

The team will name an interim coach Wednesday morning, sources said.

Spurrier, who turned 70 in April, has been South Carolina's coach since 2005. The Gamecocks are 2-4 this season and 0-4 in the SEC, sitting seventh in the SEC East.
