What could be a new era in baseball now appears ready for a tryout next year in Anaheim, Calif.
Shohei Ohtani, the 23-year-old Japanese star who can both pitch and hit, has chosen to play for the Los Angeles Angels and, if things go well, could become the first significant two-way player in Major League Baseball since Babe Ruth accomplished the feat 100 years ago.
Ohtani picked the Angels from the seven teams that were the finalists in the sweepstakes to sign him. The Yankees, in a surprise, did not make it to the final round, nor did the Boston Red Sox.
