Sha’Carri Richardson, the American sprinter who ignited a debate about marijuana and sport after she failed a drug test and lost her spot in the women’s 100 meters at the Tokyo Olympics, will miss the Games entirely after being left off a relay team, American track officials announced Tuesday.
Richardson, who admitted she used marijuana and said it was to cope with the death of her biological mother and the pressure to perform at the U.S. track and field Olympic trials, could have been selected for the women’s 4x100-meter relay race, an event the U.S. women are favored to win and her last option to compete in the Games.
