After the Single-A Savannah Sand Gnats bolted for Columbia and were renamed the Fireflies, the coastal Georgia city was in need of a new baseball team.
Ownership group Fans First Entertainment made that happen with the formation of a new team for the Coastal Plain League — a 16-team summer college league in the southeast not affiliated with Minor League Baseball.

On Thursday, the organization revealed the team's new name: The Savannah Bananas.
