Philadelphia (AFP) - Ryne Sandberg has stepped down as manager of the struggling Philadelphia Phillies, the Major League Baseball club announced on Friday.
Third base coach Pete Mackanin will take over Sandberg's duties on an interim basis for the Phillies who have the league's worst record at 26-48.
Sandberg, who is in the middle of his second full season as manager, led Philadelphia to a last place finish and a 73-89 record last season.
