Roundup: Red Sox Manager John Farrell Takes Leave to Undergo Lymphoma Treatment

Fighting back tears, Boston Red Sox Manager John Farrell said Friday that he had a “highly curable” form of lymphoma and was taking a medical leave for the rest of the season.

Farrell, 53, said that the bench coach Torey Lovullo would run the team in his absence and that he planned to be back with the team for spring training.

Farrell said the cancer had been discovered during hernia surgery this week.

He added that a mass had been removed during the procedure and that no additional surgery was necessary but added that he would start chemotherapy next week.
