Roundup: Jets Cut 2 Quarterbacks, Leaving Rookie as Backup

The Jets released both veterans vying for the backup quarterback job, for now leaving the rookie Bryce Petty as the only healthy option behind Ryan Fitzpatrick for next week’s season opener against Cleveland.

The departure of the two veterans, Josh Johnson and Matt Flynn, highlighted the Jets’ final round of cuts Saturday as they whittled their roster to the league-mandated 53-man limit. Both played well in their lone preseason game, Thursday against Philadelphia, but the Jets seem inclined to incur the risk of keeping Petty as a temporary backup and, potentially, signing another quarterback after Week 1.
