Roundup: Jacob deGrom Takes Shutout of Braves Into Eighth Before the Mets Fold

On the same night on which Alex Rodriguez nicely rounded off his career hit total at a revered 3,000, the Mets’ Jacob deGrom came up with some impressive zeros of his own on Friday — at least for a while. The best starting pitcher for the Mets this season, deGrom took a two-hit shutout into the bottom of the eighth inning, when he was undermined by some resistance by the host Atlanta Braves and some shaky defense from his own work-in-progress infield in a 2-1 loss.

With deGrom nursing a narrow 1-0 lead, Andrelton Simmons led off the eighth for the Braves with a double.
