Roundup: Giants Acquire Outfielder Marlon Byrd to Counter Dodgers’ Move

The San Francisco Giants acquired outfielder Marlon Byrd and cash Thursday from the Cincinnati Reds to shore up their injury-plagued outfield for the stretch run.

A day after losing out on second baseman Chase Utley, whom the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies, the Giants countered with a move of their own to replenish an outfield that has dealt with injuries to all three starters. Entering Thursday, San Francisco trailed Los Angeles by two games for the top spot in the National League West.

Giants center fielder Angel Pagan is on the 15-day disabled list with an injured right knee.
