Matt Carpenter tripled and scored twice and Stephen Piscotty doubled in the winning run on Wednesday, leading St. Louis past the Chicago Cubs, 4-3, to end the Cardinals’ three-game losing streak.
St. Louis scored three times in the eighth inning to avoid being swept at home for the first time this season. The Cubs have not swept a series at Busch Stadium since September 2010.
The Cubs’ Jon Lester left after seven dominant innings. He did not allow a hit after the third batter and retired 20 of the final 21 hitters he faced.
