Roundup: Athletic Bilbao Knocks Off Barcelona to End Title Drought

Athletic Bilbao ended a 31-year trophy drought with a 1-1 draw at Barcelona on Monday, claiming the Spanish Super Cup with a 5-1 aggregate victory.

After Bilbao’s stunning 4-0 home win Friday in the first leg, Barcelona, the reigning European champion, threatened a comeback in the second leg when Lionel Messi scored on a setup by Luis Suárez one minute before halftime. But Barcelona’s hopes diminished when Gerard Piqué received a red card for screaming in the face of a line judge in the 56th.

That helped Bilbao withstand the onslaught before Aritz Aduriz, who had a hat trick Friday, tied the score, 1-1, in the 74th minute.
