Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane retiring from international play

Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane is retiring from international play, the Football Association of Ireland announced Wednesday.

Keane, 36, is the country's all-time leader in goals (67) and caps (145). He will play his final game for his country next Wednesday in a friendly against Oman.

The LA Galaxy forward and captain made his first international appearance in March 1998. He has since appeared in two European Championships (2012 and 2016) and one FIFA World Cup (2002).

"He is undoubtedly one of Ireland's finest every players and I do not see his international goal record being beaten for a very long time, if ever," Ireland manager Martin O'Neill said.
