Removing Away Goals From Extra Time Builds in New Advantage in UEFA Competitions

Until this season, the away goals rule in European football had been in place since 1965 to determine the winner of a two-legged knockout tie in cases where the two teams had scored the same number of goals over the course of two matches. In such cases, the winner of the tie was the team that had scored the higher number of goals away from home. If they had scored the same number of goals at home and away, an extra time of 30 minutes was played, followed by penalty kicks if no goals were scored.

Last June, UEFA’s Executive Committee decided to scrap this rule altogether from all club competitions.
