Redskins reportedly make it official: Robert Griffin III released

The Redskins, according to multiple reports, made official Monday what had been one of the NFL's longest-running releases: Quarterback Robert Griffin III’s time with the team is over.

The team released him two days before the start of the 2016 NFL calendar year, The Washington Post reported, though coach Jay Gruden and team president Bruce Allen had said weeks ago that RGIII's future was elsewhere.

The long-anticipated move not only clears more than $16 million off salary-cap space for Washington, but it allows the 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year to sign with the team of his choice.
