BOSTON — With the Yankees trailing by a run and down to their final out, but with the bases loaded, the crack of Didi Gregorius’s bat gave rise to hope in the visitors’ dugout as the ball soared toward deep right field.
But as the Red Sox’ Rusney Castillo backed up toward the warning track and began to settle in front of the 380-foot sign, there came the realization that Gregorius’s drive would end up like so many others on Monday night — in the glove of a Boston fielder.
The final out was emblematic of how the nearly four hours of empty promises played out for the Yankees in a 4-3 loss.
