The Yankees could not have been more thrilled with what they saw Wednesday night from Luis Severino, their much ballyhooed pitching prospect. His repertoire, his competitiveness and his calm-beyond-his-years demeanor were just as advertised.
What they did not like, however, was having to hit Boston rookie Steven Wright’s knuckleball. It dipped, danced and did everything to befuddle a team that had spent the last two weeks crushing most of what came across the plate.
Wright beat the Yankees 2-1, scattering four hits and striking out nine in eight innings, silencing a capacity crowd of 47,489 and a lineup that had scored 90 runs in its last 10 games.
