Player Ratings: United States (2) vs. Honduras (1)

The United States men’s national team opened its Concacaf Gold Cup campaign with an ugly, 2-1 win over Honduras in Frisco, Tex., on Tuesday. Honduras controlled most of the game, but the Americans walked away with 3 valuable points.

Honduras came out flying and created a series of dangerous chances, but the team was repeatedly let down by its inefficient finishing; it was able to get only three of its 10 shots on goal.

The American team was flawed and disjointed for most of the game and was only barely able to withstand Honduras’s attack. In fact, Honduras probably should have scored an equalizer late, but Eddie Hernández missed two golden opportunities.
