Passing Grade for Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. Means He Can Join Oregon

The highly touted quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. passed one of the most consequential math tests in Oregon football history on Thursday, clearing the way for him to replace Marcus Mariota, last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, as the Ducks’ starter.

Adams, 22, had intended to transfer to Oregon from Eastern Washington and play immediately, under an N.C.A.A. rule that permits graduate students with eligibility remaining to continue their careers without sitting out a year, as transfers typically must do.

In February, Adams, who has one more year of athletic eligibility and had all but graduated, signed a financial aid agreement with Oregon and reportedly moved to Eugene, Ore.
