In his two previous starts this season, Chase Whitley appeared to be a potential salve for the Yankees’ fifth-starter woes, giving up one earned run in 12 innings.
After Saturday, the back end of the Yankees’ rotation still appeared to have problems, as Whitley was hammered in a 6-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
Whitley gave up five runs, including three home runs, in five and two-thirds innings.
With Masahiro Tanaka’s lingering right arm issues keeping him off the mound, the Yankees are in need of quality innings from Whitley (1-1), who had lost out on the fifth starter spot coming out of spring training.
