Olympic host process needs change now

On Friday morning the IOC announced that the 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing, China.

It will be China’s second time hosting the Olympics in a span of 14 years. In that span, the United States will not have hosted one.

This makes sense, because it doesn’t make any sense to host the Olympics right now.

It also points to a troubling trend when it comes to hosting the Games — to meet all the requirements laid down by the IOC, you need a government that is willing to spend massively and sacrifice the wants and needs of local citizens to keep the Olympics’ organizing body happy.
