N.H.L. Roundup: New Star Rallies Sabres; New Rule Dooms Them

Kyle Turris scored twice, and the Senators won a coach’s challenge to overturn a third-period Sabres goal and hang on for a 3-1 victory at Buffalo on Thursday night.

The game’s outcome was essentially decided with 9 minutes 26 seconds remaining, when Buffalo forward Evander Kane scored on a wraparound that would have tied the score at 2-2. Ottawa Coach Dave Cameron challenged the goal, and a video review showed that Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons was offside when Buffalo entered the zone.

The coach’s challenge was introduced as a rule this season.

Kane’s disallowed goal came 83 seconds after Jack Eichel, the Sabres’ 18-year-old rookie center, scored a power-play goal, rousing the sellout crowd.
