NFL owners are meeting in Minnesota this week to discuss potential rule changes ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
One of the proposals submitted by the competition committee was a revision to the current onside kick rule. The committee has proposed that onside kicks be allowed at any point when a team is trailing (instead of being limited to the fourth quarter). The revision also calls for the kicking team to line up one yard closer to the receiving team, hypothetically making it easier to recover the ball.
Onside kicks would still need to be declared under the revised rule.
