New Jersey’s Effort to Legalize Sports Betting Is Denied on Appeal

New Jersey’s effort to offer legalized sports betting was stopped again on Tuesday when a federal appeals court said the state’s most recent plan to take the bets still ran afoul of a 1992 federal law prohibiting it from doing so.

The decision by the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia was by a 2-to-1 vote and upheld a lower-court ruling that voided the state’s repeal of some prohibitions against sports gambling. It held that New Jersey’s efforts violated the United States Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, or Paspa, a divided three-judge panel ruled.
