Despite the Mets carrying the best record in the National League and racing to one of their fastest starts in franchise history, a near-panic seemed to erupt among many of their fans following Monday’s loss to the Washington Nationals.
Granted, it was a shocking and dispiriting loss to a division rival. As a result, the team’s third loss of the season inspired a pronounced outcry on the radio and the internet from fans whose expectations had soared after a franchise-record 11-1 start.
Then, after Monday’s loss, Mickey Callaway, the team’s new manager, said he hoped it would not send the Mets into a tailspin, and noted that a fresh start and a win on Tuesday would quickly wash away the sting.
