Naomi Osaka took advantage of her second chance in the third set to defeat Petra Kvitova 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-4 on Saturday, win the Australian Open and become a back-to-back Grand Slam champion.
The victory also means Osaka will move to No. 1 for the first time when the next women's rankings are released.
After taking control of the match in the second set by breaking Kvitova's serve twice in a row, Osaka stumbled in her first opportunities to claim the title. She was unable to take advantage of three championship points on Kvitova's serve at 5-3 and then was broken twice to send the match to a decisive set.
