Mikaela Shiffrin Fails to Medal in Olympic Slalom

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — Mikaela Shiffrin, who said she was vomiting just minutes before her first run, failed to win a medal in the slalom, her best event. Shiffrin, the 2014 gold medalist, wound up fourth, missing out on the podium by eight hundredths of a second. The winner was Frida Hansdotter of Sweden.

Shiffrin had been bucking history: No man or woman has ever repeated in the slalom at the Olympics.

Despite her cool exterior, Shiffrin is a self-confessed nervous-wreck. She told NBC, “It was kind of sudden; it almost felt like a virus kind of puking, less about nerves.
