On Friday, before the Mets’ 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citi Field, General Manager Sandy Alderson said the promotion of the 22-year-old prospect Michael Conforto would not affect how aggressively the Mets pursued outside help as the July 31 trade deadline approached.
Some hours later, those words rang true as the Mets acquired the veteran infielders Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for two minor league pitchers.
The trade, which the Mets officially announced after Friday’s game, should give the Mets’ stagnant offense a spark and solidify their infield defense.
