The scene Saturday at Yankee Stadium was, perhaps, close to what the Mets’ Matt Harvey had imagined as a child.
Harvey, a longtime Yankees fan, was cheered as he charged onto the mound to start the ninth inning. His pitch count was high. The crowd chanted his name, then cheered again when he struck out Alex Rodriguez.
“C’mon,” Harvey mouthed when Manager Terry Collins came to retrieve him with two outs.
Harvey had thrown 107 pitches in his first start at Yankee Stadium, and he had had the kind of start young players dream of.
