SAN FRANCISCO — Brandon Crawford, the Giants’ All-Star shortstop, made a diving stop in the sixth inning here against the Mets, rose to his knee, and fired a throw to second base, where the Giants had another All-Star, Joe Panik, waiting. It was the type of play only the most skilled shortstops can make, and the type of play the Giants make regularly.
But Crawford’s throw strayed off wildly, and he sat on the infield and watched as the ball rolled all the way into the Mets’ bullpen, and as Ruben Tejada raced around to score.
